We've seen how Courbet, Manet, Monet and the Impressionists challenged the status quo....

Then in came Cezanne with a bang.

Modern Olympia is a reinterpretation of Manet's Olympia, which caused a scandal 10 years previously.

The painting marks a shift from Impressionism to post-Impressionism.

Cezanne kept the same subject as Manet but his colours are more vibrant, more delirious and more "modern" than the Impressionists.

The painting was slammed by the critics as the work of a madman.
