Pompeii rebels against Rome

Pompeii

1st c.. BC

Yet Pompeii and other allies rebelled against Rome.

They were frustrated that - despite the fact that they paid Roman taxes and contributed to the military campaigns - they were not considered Roman and did not have Roman citizenship.

This "War of the Allies" lasted 3 years.

Sulla, a Roman general, besieged Pompeii and bombarded the city.

You can still see impacts from this attack on these walls.

Ultimately Rome won the war and Pompeii became fully Roman.

Latin became the official language, people changed their names to Latin, new buildings like the amphitheatre were built.

Pompeii became increasingly prosperous - and the place to be - with the best entertainment in the area.
