La Victoire de Samothrace, Unknown, 190 BC

Pompeii

2nd c. BC

Roman Pompeii participated in many successful Roman military campaigns.

In this period Rome defeated its arch-rivals Carthage and Corinth, razing the cities to the ground and ending the period of Greek dominance in the region.

This was a very prosperous time for Pompeii, as Rome rewarded its allies generously.

The Forum and many others buildings were built.

This statue of Apollo was a gift from the general of the Corinth expedition, Lucius Mummius Achaicus, to thank Pompeii for its military contribution.
