Degas is another artist whose work gives us incredible insight into 19th century life.

Degas loved the ballet and painted ballet scenes his entire life.

He shared glimpses of the ballets themselves, but also takes us backstage, at dance lessons and rehearsals.

His paintings are often loved for their many details - the gracefulness of the dancers' movements, their concentration, their fatigue, the expression on the teacher's face...

Like the Impressionists, Degas wanted to represents the world around him, as he experienced it, in its immediacy...

Unlike them however, he preferred to paint indoors, and from the comfort of his own studio!
