The Passages couverts & the Nouvelle Athènes

Built around 1800s, the Passages couverts were lit by gas lamps, bordered with shops and provided shelter from the rain and the cold.

At one point there were around 150 of them.

- Galerie Vivienne
- Passage Choiseul
- Passage des Panoramas
- Passage Jouffroy
- Passage Verdeau
- Passage du Grand Cerf
- Passage Bourg-l'Abbé

The Opera Garnier was built as part of Haussmann's great transformations of Paris and introduced famous works by Rossini, Berlioz, Gounod, Verdi, Wagner...

The Boulevard des Italiens, just off the Opera. was one of the most fashionable boulevards in Paris, lined with cafés and theatres and immortalised by artists like Pissarro and Caillebotte.
