Pompeii

2nd c. BC

Listen to this guide

Roman Pompeii participated in many successful Roman military campaigns.

During this period, Rome defeated its arch-rivals Carthage and Corinth, destroying the cities and ending Greek dominance in the region.

This was a highly prosperous time for Pompeii, as Rome generously rewarded its allies.

The Forum and many other buildings were constructed during this period.

The statue of Apollo was a gift from the general of the Corinth expedition, Lucius Mummius Achaicus, in gratitude for Pompeii's military contribution.
