Degas is another artist whose work gives us incredible insight into what life was like in 19th century France.

Degas loved the ballet and painted ballet scenes his entire life.

He shared glimpses of the ballets themselves, but also the dance lessons and rehearsals.

His paintings are often loved for their little details - the gracefulness of the movements, the dancers' concentration, their fatigue, the expression on their teacher's face...

Like the Impressionists, Degas wanted to represents the world around him, as he experienced it, in its immediacy.

However, unlike them, he preferred to paint indoors, and from the comfort of his own studio!
