Degas

1874

Listen to this guide

Degas is another artist whose work gives us incredible insight into what life was like in 19th-century France.

Degas loved ballet and painted ballet scenes his entire life.

He shared glimpses of the performances themselves, but also captured intimate details of the dance lessons and rehearsals.

His paintings are often cherished for their intricate details - such as the elegance of the dancers' movements, their intense concentration, and the expressions on their teacher's face...

Like the Impressionists, Degas wanted to capture the world around him, as he experienced it, in its immediacy.

However, unlike them, he preferred to paint indoors, working from the comfort of his own studio!
