Silbury Hill - The artificial mound

Silbury Hill is the tallest artificial mound in Europe - standing approximately 40 meters high!

It consists of a ring of boulders, surmounted by alternating layers of chalk and clay, extending all the way to the top.

Constructing the hill would have taken 500 men around 15 years to build.

The process involved clearing the land, carving and transporting stones, and layering 250,000 cubic meters of chalk and clay.

Nobody knows what it was for. Indeed there doesn't seem to be other example of a similar structure anywhere else!
